I always appreciated the reasoning behind placing a Mezuzah in doorways. I've likened the placement of one to cleansing a home with holy water, or burning incense. The truth is, if it doesn't hurt, and there is even the slightest chance that it can help protect, then why not? My father has his own version (above) of Mezuzah's placed inside each bedroom doorway.
